Encircled by coiling serpents, this vessel shows the Fon of Dahomey reverence for Damballa or Danbala, the serpent deity of protection and cosmic balance. Danbala is mostly used in Vodun festivals, a ceremony where offerings to deities are presented with vessels adorned with animal or serpentine imagery. Danbala is worshipped both in West Africa and in the Caribbean.
